Site Information

The Bieszczady Mountains stretch from the Uzocka Pass in the east, the Lupkowska Pass in the west, state border with Slovakia and Ukraine in the south, and the valley of San River in the north. The geology, typical for the Carpathian Range, is dominated by sandstone and shale base rocks. The area is 65% forested. A large proportion of former agricultural land is abandoned and under various stages of secondary succession, up to 50 years old. There are approximately 700 species of vascular plants and 284 species of vertebrate fauna including all large European predators (wolf, brown bear, lynx, wildcat), and a number of herbivorous species like European bison, red and roe deer, moose and wild boar. The region has a very low population density (5-10 people/sq. km).

The long term series of data on the structure, composition, and the area of local forests, numbers, harvest, and natural mortality of main game species are available from State Forest Administration. Data on plant communities, occurrence and distributions of rare and protected species are collected by the Bieszczady National Park. Research projects concern population and nutritional ecology of large mammals, ecology of soils, plant ecology, invertebrates.
